OAKBEND Marina Evolvere
valued my friend's 91
Buick
with some problems as $500 worth. My friend is happy to take that coz he paid $800 2 years ago anyways. They won't list it for sale so he can get more because the car is not even close of passing their inspection.
the kelly blue book for the car is $800 today.
I am suggesting that if he donates the car, he can write off the complete $800 and that may be better.
what is the expert suggestion? sell it to carmax for $500 or write it off as
donation
for 2011?

He would need to be very careful where he donates the car. Some
charities
take them and resell them, if it sells for $300 that is all his
deduction could be. There are some auto mechanic schools that take
donations where you may be able to take the bluebook. But beware, a
bluebook $$ doens't always mean you can take that deduction. It's a red
flag for the IRS. A good charity with spell it out for him.

If he
got to write off $800, that would only be $200 in tax savings for him if
he's in the 25% tax bracket. He's almost certainly going to come out
better by selling it for $500.

There is a charity that fixes up cars and turns around and gives it to those in need. It is in
Eastern
Carolina called
Samaritan
etc. and they will come and pickup the car but it must be running to
get it on the truck and unless you are in the upper tax bracket it might
not be worth much on your taxes but you can use Blue book value and
will be accepted by the IRS.

I wasnt sure and was telling him to consider doing the donation as a better thing..
but after reading here advised him this morning to go to
www.marinaevolvere.com
website and he just called me that it was done with ease!!
Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
